How speed and angle shape a shot

Two things a launch monitor measures the instant the ball leaves the face — its speed and the angle it climbs on — do most of the work of setting the shape of a shot. Carry grows with the square of ball speed, so small gains in speed pay off out of proportion, which is why speed training is so popular. Launch angle decides how that speed is split between forward distance and height: too low and the ball never gets up to ride the air; too high and it balloons, trading carry for a steep, soft landing.

Because this model ignores air, its distances run long and its best angle sits at 45 degrees, where a drag-free projectile flies furthest. On a real course the optimum launch is lower, because backspin adds lift that a spinning ball uses to stay airborne. How is carry distance calculated here?

The tool treats the ball as a projectile launched on level ground and uses the standard range equation from physics: carry depends on the square of ball speed and on the sine of twice the launch angle. It also reports apex height and hang time from the same model. It deliberately leaves out air resistance and spin, so it shows the geometry of launch rather than a launch-monitor number.

Why doesn't it match my launch monitor?

A real golf ball is shaped by aerodynamics: drag pulls it up short of the drag-free distance, while backspin generates lift that holds it in the air longer. Depending on the club and strike, those effects can push the real number well above or below this idealized estimate. Treat this as a teaching tool for how speed and angle interact, and use a launch monitor for fitted numbers.

What launch angle should I expect?

It varies by club and delivery, but as a rough guide drivers launch around 10 to 15 degrees, mid-irons in the high teens to low twenties, and wedges 30 degrees and up. Lofting the ball higher trades some forward carry for height and a steeper landing, which is why a wedge that launches at 45 degrees does not fly nearly as far as a driver at the same ball speed.

What is the difference between ball speed and club speed?

Club speed is how fast the clubhead is moving; ball speed is how fast the ball leaves the face after impact. Ball speed is always higher for a well-struck shot — the ratio is called smash factor — and it is ball speed, not club speed, that drives carry.
